Taste and See that the L-RD is Good!
When my husband and I were sick with Covid, part of our symptoms included loss of smell and taste. Something seemingly so simple had more of an impact than we anticipated. When it came to meals, nothing was enjoyable. Even the process of preparing food was dull, as there was no smell to enjoy prior to the meal. Our symptoms could have been so much worse. Praise G-d, after a few days we were able to function, but were just without the ability to taste and smell.
This really got me thinking. Imagine if life was like this? Imagine if food had no taste to it ever, and no smells existed. Well, some smells I know we could do without, but the removal of all smells would mean the absence of pleasant and lovely smells, like coffee and freshly baked bread. We don’t live to eat, but food is meant to be enjoyable. G-d is a G-d of beauty and creativity. Think of the wide variety of foods that exist! So many different textures, colors, and yes, tastes! This all comes from our G-d. He could have made food boring and bland, without taste. But of course, this is not the case at all. We can enjoy many different flavors, spices, and ingredients. We can walk into a bakery or a café and want to spend hours inside because of how good it smells! Food is not our idol, but we can enjoy the blessing of our Father’s creativity in food. Yeshua Himself enjoyed many meals with his disciples. In fact, sharing a meal together at the same table was greatly significant. It symbolized friendship, community, and trust. And you were meant to relax and enjoy the company and the food.
When we regained our taste and smell, it was pretty exciting! We had taken for granted an ability that we use every day, and we certainly regained our appreciation! Today, let’s give thanks to the L-rd for blessing us with such a rich variety of foods and the smells that accompany them. Though we know this is not our true home, the Father has given us many blessings to help us on our journey to our ultimate Home in Heaven. Let us remember during our next meal that the flavors and smells are gifts from Him and the meal is enjoyable because of Him.
